This award-winning competitive admissions program offers a four‑semester curriculum after completion of prerequisite coursework. The program is designed to ensure competence in the knowledge, attitudes, and skills essential to nursing practice in a variety of settings. Graduates of this program are prepared to take the NCLEX examination for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse and upon successful completion will be eligible to work in a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare office. Graduates may also transfer to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Special Admission Requirements

Admission to the Nursing AAS program is competitive and requires completion of specific prerequisites for acceptance. Upon an initial review of your high school transcript as well as transcripts from ALL colleges previously attended, you will be directed to either complete the Nursing Application or be accepted to the Health Studies/ Pre-Nursing Path to complete any remaining requirements.

Internship Opportunities

Students will receive direct nursing experience through completion of clinical hours at local hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, or medical offices.

Dual Admissions Opportunities

Take advantage of the dual admissions opportunities and be accepted into bachelorette nursing programs at either SUNY Upstate Medical University or Maria College while attending the Nursing AAS program at SUNY FMCC.

Program Course Layout

This rigorous program provides a balance of liberal arts, sciences, and nursing coursework with hands-on clinical experiences to prepare you for a career as a registered nurse. Here are some of the courses you will take.

NUR 105 Nursing Science I

This course focuses on nursing foundation and methodology related to care of patients across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed upon acquiring a body of knowledge that promotes nursing essence and disciplined inquiry. Topics include the nursing process, the role of healthcare team members, therapeutic communication, provisions for meeting basic physical needs, nutrition, medication administration, and the special needs of the aged.

BIO 182 Anatomy and Physiology II

This course provides a system approach to the study of human anatomy and physiology, emphasizing cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, and reproductive systems as well as metabolism, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. Laboratory classes are designed to reinforce the lecture material and include dissections of vertebrate specimens and experiments on animal tissue and human subjects.

NUR 207 Pharmacology

This course is designed to build upon prior nursing foundation, nursing essence, and methodology of basic pharmacology. Emphasis is placed on concepts of pharmacology, therapeutic drug classifications, commonly prescribed individual drugs, human responses to drug therapy, and applying nursing process in relation to prescribed drug therapy regimens

PSY 200 Lifespan Development

Concepts and contemporary theories of human development throughout the life span. Considers biological, intellectual, emotional, and social maturation and typical problems from infancy through adulthood.
