Personal Care Aide (PCA) Training

Personal Care Aide Training is an excellent training opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the rewarding field of Healthcare. Students who successfully complete the training will receive a Certificate from the New York State Department of Health. 

  • PCA’s are likely to work in client’s homes, assisted living facilities or other facilities (not nursing homes). They will assist clients to complete activities of daily living such as exercise, walking, bathing, and grooming. In addition, they may also be expected to do some light housekeeping, run errands, and participate in meal preparation.
  • The course consists of an intensive seven days of training over a 2-week training period.

Cost and Registration Requirements 

  • Training Cost – $800. which covers all expenses for classroom, laboratory training, and training materials
  • You must be at least 17 years of age
  • You must provide your own watch with a sweep, second hand
  • You must attest to having a clear criminal record (absolutely no misdemeanors or felonies)

How can I get assistance to help pay for the training? Although No financial aid is available for this training, the following programs, pending eligibility, may be able to offer financial assistance to help offset the cost of the program:

Scholarship OpportunityThe Fulton-Montgomery Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of a scholarship in memory of Margaret A. Collier. Mrs. Collier’s daughter, Gail and her husband, Jerry Ryan have established a scholarship of $500.00 to be awarded to a student enrolled in FM’s Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide and Personal Care Aide Programs. Mrs. Collier had a passion for these programs, since she herself was a certified Home Health Aide in New York and New Jersey. If you are working with a sponsoring agency such as a nursing home, the agency must complete the Sponsoring Agency Letter.  Click here to print the letter.

Sixteen students will be accepted into the program. Applications will be on a first come, first serve basis. Registration deadline dates apply.

What is expected of participants during the training to become certified as a PCA?

  • The program consists of seven days of training over a 2-week training period and will be a combination of classroom and laboratory skills instruction. Attendance is mandatory in order to complete the training and receive a PCA Certificate from the New York State Department of Health.
  • Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to participate in all the training activities.
  • It will be important for students to ask questions and to ask for help in understanding the classroom material and clinical procedures.
  • Throughout the training program students will be selected for completion based on the following criteria:
  1. Sympathetic attitude toward care of the sick
  2. Able to read and write as it relates to the course work and carrying out directions of a care plan
  3. Maturity and ability to deal effectively with the demands of the work
  4. Satisfactory completion of all the required Classroom and Laboratory training in accordance with the program curriculum.

  • Submit completed form to the FM Registrar’s Office, N-107 (Student Development Center), with identification / proof of age

_____ Proof of minimum age of 17 years (ID must be a Government issued photo ID such as a learner’s permit or driver’s license)

  • Submit payment of $800. or proof of sponsorship to the FM Bursar, A – 107 (Student Welcome Center).

What is the Refund Policy? Applicants who cancel their enrollment by the deadline date will receive a full refund.  After the deadline date, no refunds will be issued.
