Get Involved on Campus – Join FM’s Student Senate Association!

Posted: September 3, 2021 — Hi FM Students!

I would like to welcome you to the FM campus this fall!  If you are a new student starting this fall and or if you are returning student, my best wishes for a successful semester and academic year.  It has been a long time since we have had students on our campus and I can assure you that we are so happy to see you, in-person, and on-campus this fall.

As the Vice President for Student Affairs, I work very closely with the Student Senate Association.  The Student Senate Association is the student government arm on campus.  It is comprised of clubs and organizations who elect a Senator who then attends monthly meetings to facilitate meaningful changes and enhancements to our campus.  I regularly attend Senate meetings and make myself available to this student government group.  I would like to invite you to become involved in the Student Senate Association this fall.

This year, we will be using Raider’s Cove, located in the Physical Education Building, as a hub of student-led activities and club meetings.  In fact, the Student Senate Association will also hold monthly meetings in this space.

A new Student Activities Coordinator has been hired to work with you.  Her name is Meghan Druziak, and you may know her as an academic advisor in our TRiO Quest program.  She has many great ideas for student engagement programming and I am looking forward to introducing her to you.

Our first Student Senate meeting will be held on Thursday, September 9th at 12:30 p.m. This meeting will be held in Raiders Cove.  Please remember to wear your mask.

Members of the FM Student Senate are comprised of one elected member (senator) from each active club on campus. All students pay a student activity fee and are recognized members of the FM Student Senate Association (SSA). All members may participate in the SSA through individual participation or by representation. Students elected to the officer positions continue to represent their club. All senators, including officers, shall have one vote for any item before the FM Student Senate.

If you are looking for a leadership position on campus this fall, read below about officer positions and plan to attend our September 9th meeting:

Composition of the FMCC Student Senate

Club Senator: At the start of the fall semester, after our first SSA meeting, we will host a club fair and invite every student to attend and learn about clubs on our campus.  Each club will then elect a senator from their club. The senator will represent that club and their interests at the FM Student Senate. The senator will hold a one-year (September-May) term. Each senator will have one vote at the Student Senate meetings.

Student Trustee: This is an elected position.  Once the semester gets started, we will hold an election for our Student Trustee for the 2021-2022 academic year.  The Student Trustee will act as a liaison between the Board of Trustees and the FM Student Senate. The Student Trustee shall be elected from the student body at-large and will serve on the FM Student Senate as well as the FM Board of Trustees. The Student Trustee will serve a one-year term (September – August) and shall have all of the responsibility and authority as provided by New York State Law. The Student Trustee may be elected for additional terms by the student body as long as the student remains enrolled at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. The Student Trustee shall vote at FM Student Senate meetings. I sent out a call for nominations for this today, 9/3/2021 so if you are interested or want to nominate someone, please send the nomination to activities@fmcc.edu.  Nominations will be received until 9/10/2021.

The Chair will preside over the FM Student Senate meetings. The Chair will create the agenda for the FM Student Senate meetings. The Chair shall serve as a liaison to the College President regarding matters of the FM Student Senate. The Chair may appoint committees of the FM Student Senate as needed to conduct research on an issue and make recommendations to the FM Student Senate or to conduct the business of the Senate. The Chair shall vote at FM Student Senate meetings.

Vice-Chair: The Vice Chair shall be a FM Student Senator and shall be elected by the FM Student Senate. The Vice-Chair shall serve a one-year term (September – May). In the absence of the Chair, the Vice-Chair will preside over the FM Student Senate meetings. The Vice-Chair shall vote at FM Student Senate meetings.

Assistant Treasurer: The Assistant Treasurer shall be elected by the FM Student Senate. The Assistant Treasurer shall serve a one-year term (September- May). The Assistant Treasurer will meet with the Treasurer weekly and will provide the FM Student Senate with financial information regarding their accounts at the monthly Senate Meetings. 2. Maintaining and distributing minutes of the FM Student Senate meetings
  3. Keeping records of the FM Senate proceedings

All members of the FM Student Senate must maintain at least a 2.5 average in order to serve in their elected positions.  After reading this, if you are interested in meeting me and hearing more about these opportunities, please feel free to email me at jane.kelley@fmcc.edu, or Meghan Druziak at Meghan.Druziak@fmcc.edu.  Once I hear from you, I will set up a time for us to meet and discuss your area(s) of interest.
