COVID-19 Updates to FM Campus

Posted: March 12, 2020March 13, 2020

As promised, I am bringing you the latest information regarding FM’s response to the COVID-19 situation. The daily briefing from SUNY provided new guidance for campuses. I will continue to share details with you as they become known. I appreciate your patience as we work through a very fluid situation.

FM has now been mandated to move to remote learning for most face-to-face classes.

Remote learning for FM students begins after spring break, on Monday, March 30. Governor Cuomo announced that SUNY’s distance-learning program will begin March 19 and so for our campus, the remote learning period will start the Monday after spring break.

All courses will utilize the Blackboard Learning Management System to communicate with students. It will be important for students to log in to Blackboard and check the course expectations for each of their courses. Blackboard may be reached here.

The exceptions to remote learning include clinical sections, science, and technology labs and physical education activity courses. Students will continue to meet on-campus, as scheduled for the exceptions to remote learning. Faculty members who teach these courses will communicate on-campus meetings and requirements to students through Blackboard.

Remote learning will take place until further notice. We will continue to monitor this rapidly evolving situation and we will be guided in our decision-making by the State University of New York and local health officials.

I want to emphasize again that the College remains open at this time with all services and staff available. At the conclusion of spring break, the residence halls will be open and meal plans resume. Students will have the usual access to facilities and academic and student support services.

I understand there are far more questions than answers about this rapidly developing situation. As always, health and safety considerations guide our decision-making.  I will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available.

In an effort to provide you with updates regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we want you to know that we prioritize the health and wellness of our students, faculty, and staff, and we will continue to work together to navigate this challenging and evolving situation. The latest guidance from the Office of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and SUNY is below. Please continue to monitor your FM e-mail for further updates, and please also visit https://www.fmcc.edu/about/campus-safety/novel-coronavirus-2019-covid-19-information/, our dedicated information resource on this topic.

COVID-19 Update

  • There are currently no known cases of COVID-19 on the FM campus. We are not aware of any cases in the immediate vicinity.
  • The FM Leadership Team meets regularly to be as proactive as possible in working toward protecting the health of students, faculty, and staff.

Spring Break/Distance Learning

  • Yesterday, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that as a preventative measure SUNY and CUNY schools are moving toward a distance education model.
  • FM’s Spring Break begins this Friday, March 13 for students. Consistent with the direction from SUNY System Administration, Spring Break has been extended one week for students to allow instructional faculty members to train and test the distance education capability.
  • The FM campus will remain open during Spring Break. During the week of March 23, faculty members will be on campus for training, and student advising appointments are being held. The Evans Library will be open with the regular offering of services, including tutoring and academic support.
  • For distance learning, students will need access to a computer or smartphone with a high-speed, broadband, or DSL internet connection (dial-up connections are not recommended.) FM will utilize the Blackboard Learning Management System as the launching pad for all courses. Click here to access Blackboard. There are mobile apps for iPhone and Android smartphones.

Regular classroom instruction will resume on Monday, March 30. At this time FM will employ distance learning as an option while the College adheres to the public health strategy of low density. FM’s small class sizes fit that strategy.

Residential Students

  • The Residence Halls will be closing as scheduled and will reopen on Sunday, March 29th at noon. The spring break bus will also be extended for that time as well.
  • During spring break, the Residence Life Office will continuously communicate all updates through FM email. Please check email on a daily basis. The Residence Life office will remain open during the spring break from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Mondays – Fridays. As always you may contact Residence Life at residencelife@fmcc.edu or 518-736-3622 ext.8821.

  • The FM Leadership Team is evaluating all events and will provide guidance to each host. Online formats for events are strongly encouraged. For now, all large events scheduled until April 15 will be canceled or rescheduled. Decisions on events scheduled after April 15 will be deferred until more information is available.
  • We will communicate a decision regarding the commencement ceremony in the coming weeks.

FM continues to consult with local and state health agencies, as well as SUNY, to ensure we take appropriate steps with respect to your health and education. While we adopt this approach to enable continuity of education, please know your well-being is always our number one priority.
