FM @ PM: Open Mic Night

Posted: August 26, 2018 — FM, like most community colleges, offers open enrollment, which means anyone can attend as long as she or he has a high school degree or has (or is working towards) a G.E.D. But FM is open in many other ways to the communities it proudly serves. The College hosts numerous events, such as presentations, art exhibits, and workshops to just name a few, to which all are welcome, usually free of charge. Indeed, part of the College’s mission is to offer “cultural and intellectual opportunities”, and now it is adding an open mic night in its continued pursuit of realizing its mission!

Starting Wednesday, October 10  and occurring every second Wednesday during the fall and spring semesters moving forward, the Mark Orlosky Memorial Committee—which was formed last year to bring music to campus and is named in honor of Mark Orlosky, a former FM student and professional musician who was born and raised in Gloversville and who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 2016—will host an open mic at which instrumentalists, singers, and rappers can perform, and all can listen to musical performances. The open mic will start at 6:00 PM and will be staged at Books & Bytes, FM’s coffee house, where, aside from food and beverages available for purchase, there will also be some free refreshments for attendees courtesy of the FM Foundation.

Additionally, the open mic will often feature a performer from the campus or surrounding communities to kick off the event; we at FM know there is immense talent gracing the campus and area, so we want to showcase some of it. Afterwards, the mic is indeed open for anyone who attends, and all one need bring is his or her guitar, keyboard, or vocal chords to participate, as the College is furnishing a P.A. system, including complete microphones (a must for an open MIC night!). Here is thus a chance for those without such equipment—or those who do not have a public venue in which to set up such gear and perform—to get their song on and show everyone what they have got! Open Mic Night is also a great place for those who do regularly perform to try out new material, jam with new people, and, who knows, maybe find some other musicians with whom to collaborate beyond the intimate confines of Books & Bytes.

So, mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 10 at 6:00 to come to FM’s Open Mic Night to perform, to listen to great music, to have a bite (and there is free wi-fi for your bytes!), or to just meet some new people. And while you are here, learn about all of the other great cultural and intellectual opportunities FM affords—night and day—including upcoming musical events the Mark Orlosky Memorial Committee has planned (one of which will be previewed in a forthcoming weekly article).

We know FM and the communities it serves—that is, YOU—have talent. Let’s see what you’ve got!
