Tips for Job Seekers

Appearance is the First Thing Employers Will Notice!

  • Always dress professionally, even if the jobs that you are interested in do not require business attire (suit, tie, dress shoes)
  • Jeans or formal evening attire are not appropriate
  • Dress conservatively
  • Not only dressing, but acting in a professional manner is important (don’t have your cell phone on; use professional language, you want to stand out in a POSITIVE manner)

Obtain a List of Employers Prior to the Job Fair

  • Employers like to know that you have “done your homework”- learn about the companies that you are most interested in so employers know that you are serious
  • Make sure to meet with employers from the companies that you are most interested in first, so you don’t run out of time

You Want to “Sell Yourself” to the Employers

  • Use your time wisely
  • Stand out amongst the crowd
  • Always introduce yourself before the start of a conversation

Be Sure to Bring Your Resume

  • You don’t want run out of copies!
    • Bring 1-2 copies of your resume for each employer you plan on meeting with
    • Give yourself enough time to update your resume and get it critiqued!

Questions to Ask

  • What kinds of entry level positions exist within your company?
  • What qualities do you look for in new professionals?
  • What are the opportunities for advancement within your company?
  • What do I need to know about the application process?
  • How does your company measure performance
