Dr. Varghese Pynadath left India in 1961 to further his studies in the United States.  He attended Fordham University where he earned a M.S. and went on to the University of Sarasota to earn a Ph.D.  In 1967, he joined the faculty of FM as an instructor in the Sciences.  Today, Varghese is a full professor.

Throughout his many years at the College, Varghese has served in various leadership positions.  For almost ten years, he was the International Student Advisor; for almost ten years he chaired the Academic Standards Committee; from 1985-1996, he served as the College’s Dean of Arts & Sciences.  In 1989 he chaired the Steering Committee for the College’s 25th Anniversary Celebration and most recently co-chaired the Middle States Steering Committee which was a three-year project.  Currently he is serving as a Co-Principal Investigator for a three-year National Science Foundation funded project that involves partnership between FM and HFM BOCES in developing a two-year Engineering Technology program for 11th and 12th grade students.

In 1979, Varghese was given the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.  “Working with the students is most satisfying,” says Varghese.  “But what’s most rewarding is hearing of their successes after transfer.”

Varghese, and his wife Rosy, whom he met and married in the summer of 1968 in India, reside in Johnstown.  They have three children:  David, Joseph, and Elizabeth.
