FM To Host Financial Aid Information Nights

Although your high school student’s senior year has just begun, now is the time to start thinking about them going off to college in the fall of 2013.  I know it is hard to believe, and even harder to start thinking about paying those tuition bills, but now is the perfect time to start gathering all the information you need to make the best possible financial choice for you and your child.  How do you do this?  First, start with research.

The Internet is a wonderful tool for research as there are an abundant amount of helpful websites regarding funding your child’s education and actually finding the best possible college for your child.  Websites to visit include www.studentaid.ed.gov, www.hesc.com, www.collegeboard.org, and www.fastweb.com, to name a few.  At those same websites you can begin to find information on scholarship searches to assist with the cost of college.

Secondly, as a parent with a child heading off to college, you should attend one of FM’s “High School Financial Aid Information Sessions.”  Beginning the first week in November, Financial Aid Advisor Moira Samek and I are scheduled to bring all the latest information to you and your student during these sessions.  Whether your child plans on attending FM, another SUNY campus, or even a private college, Moira and I will steer you in the right direction as you navigate your path to finding the right college at the right price.

During the session, you can expect to find out which financial forms you need to file such as FAFSA, TAP, or Profile; learn when to file them; and, learn what you should be looking for as well as those items to avoid!  We will provide an in-depth presentation that reviews the forms, the types of financial aid available, and what to do if there are special circumstances your family may be encountering.  There will also be plenty of time to ask questions on a one-on-one basis following the session.

High School Financial Aid Sessions will be held on FM’s main campus, 2805 State Highway 67, Johnstown in the College Theatre from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  If you wish to take a tour of FM’s campus, tours will be available beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Light refreshments will be provided at each presentation.

Although a date has been designated for each particular high school, please note that you are more than welcome to attend an evening that fits your schedule.  Dates include:  Monday, November 5, designated for Galway, Wells, and Northville High School students and parents; Wednesday, November 14, designated for Amsterdam, Broadalbin-Perth, and Mayfield High School students and parents; Wednesday, November 28, designated for Fonda, Johnstown, and Gloversville High School students and parents; and Monday, December 3, designated for Fort Plain, St. Johnsville, and Canajoharie High School students and parents.

Please join us and bring all of your questions.  We will be happy to answer them the best we can.  If you cannot attend a session, you are always welcome to call our office at (518) 736-FMCC (3622).
